Birmingham couple's dinner TikTok hits 23.8M views

A Birmingham couple have seen their social media presence explode after posting videos of their nightly dinners. Dawn Emmett, 58, and Neil Haycock, 52, launched their 'Everyone Needs a Neil' TikTok account in February, and within six months, they've racked up an extraordinary 23.8 million views. With 55,400 followers, they say they "can't believe" the success they've achieved in such a short period. Their Facebook page, launched just last week, has already attracted nearly 30,000 followers.

From One Video to Millions of Views

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Dawn said: "It's madness really, we can't believe it. I just put that first video up and you don't expect things to just blow up like that. I think it just showed that there's a real appetite for that kind of content locally."

The couple's videos showcase their everyday dinner routine at home, with Neil bringing in plates of food ranging from classic roasts to peri peri chicken and seabass. Their straightforward, down-to-earth approach has earned them a loyal following, with comments regularly asking, "Where can I find a Neil?" or "What's for dinner, Neil?!"

Positive Community and Engagement

Dawn added: "We find it a lot of fun because everyone has been so positive. I'd say four, five, no more than 10 negative comments in all of the thousands of comments that we've had. It's kind of like everyone's become a part of our family."

The couple met eight years ago before moving in together in 2024. Neil proposed to Dawn in Egypt last year, and their wedding is planned for next October. Dawn said the initial idea came from family members always saying 'everyone needs a Neil.' She explained: "He was just standing in the kitchen one night, and I just walked in and thought I'm just going to try this because it could work."

Real People, Real Content

Since launching, the channel has earned 1.1 million likes and 486,000 likes on videos. The couple now get regularly recognised when they're out and about, often spotted when out for dinner or shopping.

Dawn said: "People seem to have really resonated with it, and I think it's because we've switched the narrative as well. Neil's looking after me. I'll do some cooking on there, but not a lot and people will say 'bring back Neil!' He's just looking after me and people love that. So many women, and men, say it's amazing the way Neil treats me. There's so many comments of proposals or requests for Neil to come cook for me. We just sit there and howl over all the comments."

She also highlighted the importance of engaging with followers: "I always go back and reply to all the comments, because it's really important. They make the effort to comment lovely things. I think it's what's helped it fly so quickly."

Encouraging Others to Start

The couple want to show others that whatever their age, you don't need to be young or particularly tech-savvy to start something new and connect with people. Dawn said: "What I really love about TikTok is that it's real people. People want to see real people. It's definitely not just young people, there are older people on there and just them being real. And that's what makes it great for me."

She added: "When you're on the internet, it can be very negative, and I find that quite sad. We haven't found that, but, if people do find that, don't allow that to stop you from doing content that's fun. Because we've found it really fun and enjoyable. Just don't allow the negativity to get in your head and just have fun."
