Birmingham's World Book Day 2026 Showcases 37 Incredible Homemade Costumes

Birmingham families have once again demonstrated their exceptional creativity and dedication to literature with a stunning array of homemade costumes for World Book Day 2026. Parents and children across the city have collaborated to produce some of the most inventive and book-inspired outfits ever seen, sharing their efforts on the Brummie Mummies Facebook page.

Highlighted Costumes from the Celebrations

Among the standout creations were costumes based on popular children's books and characters. One child transformed into Elmer the Elephant, featuring large, brightly-painted cardboard ears and a trunk, while another became the Book Fairy with wings crafted from the pages of an actual book. Other notable entries included Paddington Bear, The Pirates Next Door, and a character from There’s a Rang-tan in my Bedroom.

Diverse Literary Inspirations

The costumes showcased a wide range of literary inspirations, from classic tales to modern favorites. Participants dressed as Tripod from H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, Tracey Beaker from Jacqueline Wilson's series, and an eight-legged caterpillar from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The event also saw creative interpretations of characters like Dolly Parton and a Mandrake from the Harry Potter universe.

Classic Characters and Community Spirit

Traditional costumes remained popular, with appearances from Harry Potter, Where's Wally, Matilda, Cat in the Hat, Mr Bump, Peter Rabbit, and the Very Hungry Caterpillar. The community spirit was palpable as families shared photos and ideas, fostering a sense of pride and togetherness. Everyone looked fabulous, and it is hoped that all participants enjoyed a wonderful day celebrating literature.
