Kathleen Gray, a former ballroom dancer who won multiple competitions alongside her late husband Allan, has celebrated her 100th birthday at a Nottinghamshire care home, surrounded by family and friends.
The milestone was marked at Church Farm Care's Church Farm in Cotgrave, where Kathleen was joined by her family, fellow residents, and staff for a special tea party. Born in Leicester in 1926, Kathleen lived in the city for most of her life before moving to Nottinghamshire 10 years ago to be closer to her daughter and two grandsons.
A decorated ballroom dancing career
While not much is known about Kathleen's decorated career as a ballroom dancer due to her now living with advanced dementia, her daughter understands it was a significant part of her mother's life. She recalls it started out as a fun pastime for Kathleen and her late husband Allan, but they quickly progressed into a successful competitive partnership.
The couple is believed to have entered and won numerous ballroom competitions throughout the East Midlands in the 1940s and 1950s. A photograph of Kathleen showing off her dancing moves, believed to have been taken in the 1940s or 1950s, was shared during the celebration.
Celebrating a life well lived
Lucy Atkinson, co-founder and director of Church Farm Care, said: "Reaching 100 is an incredible milestone, and it was lovely to celebrate Kathleen with the people closest to her."
Atkinson added: "Ballroom dancing was clearly an important part of Kathleen's life, and hearing about the competitions she and Allan enjoyed together gives us another wonderful insight into her story. At Church Farm Care, getting to know the person behind the care is so important, so occasions like this give us a special opportunity to celebrate not just the milestone itself, but the life and memories that have shaped them."
Family and community support
Kathleen's daughter and two grandsons, who live in Nottinghamshire, were among those attending the tea party. The move to the county a decade ago allowed Kathleen to be closer to her family, who have been a constant presence in her life. The care home staff and fellow residents also joined in the celebration, making the day a community event.
The 100th birthday celebration at Church Farm Care in Cotgrave provided an opportunity to honour Kathleen's long life and her past achievements as a competitive ballroom dancer, a chapter of her life that continues to offer insight into her personal history.
