Norden Couple Celebrates 70 Years of Marriage After Meeting at Rochdale Council

June and Rodney Stanley, aged 91 and 93, are preparing to celebrate their remarkable Platinum wedding anniversary on March 17. The Norden couple first met as teenage colleagues at Rochdale Council, where their enduring love story began over seven decades ago.

A Council Romance Blossoms

Their journey started in July 1950 when Rodney, then 17, was tasked with training June, a 16-year-old new typist at the council. Despite family legend suggesting Rodney's brother Graham also had an interest in June, it was Rodney who won her heart. This led to their wedding at St Luke's Parish Church in Heywood in 1956, a joyful ceremony that marked the beginning of their lifelong partnership.

Community Pillars and Professional Achievements

June and Rodney are well-known figures in the Rochdale community. June eventually became the manager of the Gracie Fields Theatre, while Rodney dedicated over 40 years to the council, retiring as an assistant education officer. Beyond his professional life, Rodney is a former Rochdale Man of the Year, recognised for coaching junior badminton for nearly 60 years. His sporting legacy includes coaching many county-level players and even a young Keira Walsh before she found fame as a Lioness.

Royal Recognition and Family Traditions

To mark their 70th year, the couple will receive a congratulatory card from King Charles III and Queen Camilla. This new arrival will join a treasured collection of messages from the late Queen Elizabeth II, who sent her best wishes for their 60th and 65th anniversaries. At the heart of their journey is a large and devoted family. June and Rodney are proud parents to two daughters, Karen and Beverley, with four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The entire clan still gathers every Tuesday for tea at June's house, a long-standing tradition where June prepares the meal herself.

Secrets to a Lasting Union

When asked for the secret to such a long marriage, June emphasizes weathering storms together and "keeping on liking each other," even when it isn't easy. Rodney attributes their success to "a lot of love, a lot of luck, and a lot of patience." The family will gather at the couple's home in Norden this Tuesday to celebrate seven decades of unconditional love, reflecting on a life built on shared values and community spirit.
