As the sun warms the air and birds sing loudly, spring has arrived, bringing a busy season for new puppy arrivals. Vic Barlow, known as the Dogfather, shares his insights in a heartfelt column, noting the joy of lighter coats and eager dogs by the lake.
The Challenges of Puppyhood
While new puppies are delightful, they grow quickly and require significant guidance to navigate the world. Unlike computers, dogs lack a delete button for bad habits, making prevention key. For instance, allowing a puppy to chew an old sock may lead to ruined shoes, as behaviors learned early can persist.
Essential Rules for Training
Vic emphasizes two critical rules for dog owners. First, the 'Four-on-The Floor' rule: dogs must keep all paws on the ground to receive attention, discouraging jumping that can damage clothing. Second, never tolerate nipping, as it can escalate to biting. He advises against rough games like Tug-o-War, which encourage such behavior.
Positive Reinforcement and Socialization
During training, praise is essential for reinforcing good behavior. Treats can be used sparingly, with the goal of phasing them out over time. Socialization is another big step, where dogs learn through scent and need space to avoid accidents. Owners should allow dogs to meet others at a distance, respecting their boundaries.
Strengthening the Bond
To build respect and a strong relationship, spend quality time playing games with your dog. Vic warns that games played without the owner can weaken this bond. For hands-on guidance, he invites owners to join his Saturday morning training class by texting 075905 60012.
A Lifetime of Experience
With over 32 years in dog training, Vic has worked with more than 4,500 dogs of all breeds and sizes. He describes it as a privilege, learning as much from them as he taught. Vic states, "After all this time communicating directly with dogs, I have never met a dog I could not help. Owners, however, are a little more difficult and need to learn how dogs really communicate." He encourages getting into the mind of a dog for deeper understanding.
