Stourbridge Teen Named St John Ambulance's West Midlands Cadet of the Year

Amelia Haydon, a sixteen-year-old volunteer from Stourbridge, has been awarded the prestigious title of St John Ambulance's Regional Cadet of the Year for the West Midlands. This honour follows her outstanding performance in a rigorous national competition that evaluated her first aid expertise, leadership capabilities, and communication skills.

National Competition Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The competition, which marks its 40th anniversary this year, was held from February 27 to March 1 at Ingestre Hall near Stafford. It brought together over 35 of the most exceptional cadets from across the country, all of whom had previously won county-level contests to secure their spots in the national final.

During the event, participants engaged in a series of demanding assessments designed to mirror real-life scenarios. These included first aid simulations, teamwork and problem-solving exercises, presentations, interviews, and group discussions. An experienced panel of judges oversaw the proceedings, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each cadet's abilities.

Amelia's Journey and Achievements

Amelia, who is currently studying for her GCSEs at Wolverhampton Girls' High School, volunteers with the Stourbridge Cadet unit. Beyond her academic and St John commitments, she enjoys playing guitar, rock climbing, painting, and watching Formula One. She has also recently embarked on her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Reflecting on her achievement, Amelia expressed immense pride, stating, "Being selected as Regional Cadet of the Year is one of my greatest achievements. It means so much that my passion for the organisation has been recognised, and I'm incredibly excited for everything that this year will hold for me." She added, "Being a part of St John Ambulance has taught me skills that I will carry with me for life; I am grateful for the opportunity I have to pay something back to the organisation."

Real-Life Impact and Leadership Development

Many competitors in the competition have already applied their first aid training in real emergencies, assisting with conditions such as cardiac arrests, seizures, fractures, and severe asthma attacks. Amelia herself has used her skills to help a man experiencing a heart attack in a restaurant, though she noted that he only heeded advice after her mother repeated it. This experience has strengthened her resolve to build confidence and advocate for youth voices within the organisation.

Recognition from St John Ambulance Leaders

Rear Admiral Simon Williams CB CVO KStJ, Prior of the Priory of England and the Islands of the Order of St John, praised the cadets, saying, "I am immensely proud of every cadet who took part in this year’s National Cadet of the Year competition. As we mark the 40th anniversary of this award, it is inspiring to see such high levels of skill, confidence and compassion among our young volunteers."

Shona Dunn CB, Chief Executive of St John Ambulance, also commended the participants, noting, "The Cadets demonstrated not only outstanding first aid ability, but also leadership, teamwork and a genuine commitment to helping others. They represent the very best of St John Ambulance, and I have no doubt they will continue to make a real difference in their communities and beyond."

As Regional Cadet of the Year, Amelia will serve as an ambassador for St John Ambulance over the next year. Alongside the National Cadet of the Year and seven other regional winners, she will represent young volunteers at various events and royal engagements, promote youth involvement, and champion the importance of first aid and community volunteering nationwide.
