Teen Volunteer Triumphs as St John Ambulance Regional Cadet of the Year
A teenage volunteer from Needham Market has been honoured as St John Ambulance's Regional Cadet of the Year for the East of England, following a rigorous national competition that assessed his exceptional first aid knowledge, leadership abilities, and communication skills.
National Competition Celebrates 40th Anniversary
14-year-old Ruben Pollard was chosen to represent the East of England region after being selected from over 35 of St John Ambulance's top Cadets nationwide, all of whom had previously won county competitions to qualify for the national final. The event, marking its 40th anniversary this year, was held recently at Ingestre Hall near Stafford, bringing together young volunteers for a weekend of demanding assessments designed to test their first aid proficiency, leadership qualities, and dedication to volunteering.
During the competition, Cadets participated in a series of exercises, including first aid scenarios, teamwork and problem-solving tasks, presentations, interviews, and group discussions, all evaluated by an experienced panel of judges. Many challenges were based on real-life situations that Cadets might encounter while volunteering in their communities.
Ruben's Background and Achievements
Ruben is currently a student at Stowupland High School and volunteers at the Stowmarket Cadet unit. Outside of school, he has a strong interest in sport, with a particular passion for cycling, regularly completing 20-to-30-mile rides on weekends, though he prioritises his duties with St John Ambulance when needed. He also practises Muay Thai.
At school, Ruben has taken on roles such as School Council member, Sports Leader, and Ambassador, receiving numerous tutor and subject awards, as well as recognition for his volunteering through a dedicated appreciation award.
Reflections and Real-Life Impact
Reflecting on his achievement, Ruben said: "I'm really proud to have been selected as East of England Regional Cadet of the Year. Being part of St John Ambulance has given me so many opportunities to learn new skills and build confidence, and it's taught me how important first aid can be when someone needs help. I've met some amazing people through the organisation, and I'm really grateful to all that I have had the pleasure to work with and my family for all the support they've given me. It means a lot to represent the East of England, and I hope it encourages other young people to get involved with St John Ambulance and learn first aid."
Many competitors have already applied their first aid skills in real emergencies, assisting with conditions like cardiac arrest, seizures, fractures, heat-related problems, major bleeds, and severe asthma attacks. On one occasion, Ruben helped someone who believed they were having a heart attack. He provided an initial response by conducting basic surveys and observations, speaking with the individual, and monitoring their condition. From this assessment, it appeared the person was likely experiencing a panic attack rather than a heart attack, and Ruben stayed with them to help keep them calm until they began to feel better and their condition improved.
Leadership Praise and Future Role
Rear Admiral Simon Williams CB CVO KStJ, Prior of the Priory of England and the Islands of the Order of St John, commented: "I am immensely proud of every Cadet who took part in this year's National Cadet of the Year competition. As we mark the 40th anniversary of this award, it is inspiring to see such high levels of skill, confidence, and compassion among our young volunteers."
Shona Dunn CB, chief executive of St John Ambulance, added: "The Cadets demonstrated not only outstanding first aid ability but also leadership, teamwork, and a genuine commitment to helping others. They represent the very best of St John Ambulance, and I have no doubt they will continue to make a real difference in their communities and beyond."
The National Cadet of the Year, supported by a team of eight Regional Cadets of the Year, will serve as an ambassador for St John Ambulance over the coming year, representing young volunteers at events and royal engagements, promoting youth involvement across the organisation, and advocating for the importance of first aid and volunteering in communities nationwide.
