Pensioners in a North London borough are being offered a significant financial boost this festive season, with a one-off payment designed to help with rising household costs.
Eligibility for the £200 Payment
Residents of Islington who are of State Pension age (66 or older) and receive Pension Credit may be eligible for a £200 cash grant. This support comes from the government's Household Support Fund, which is administered locally by Islington Council. To qualify, applicants must live in Islington as their primary and permanent address and be on a low income while receiving either Pension Credit, Guarantee Credit, or Savings Credit.
The council has confirmed it will verify claims using Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) data and other official systems. Crucially, this £200 payment is separate and provided on top of the annual DWP £10 Christmas Bonus that eligible pensioners automatically receive.
How to Apply and Receive the Money
Applications for the fund are now open. If successful, the £200 will be issued as a single payment. The council aims to process applications and reach a decision within 21 days of receipt.
The payment will be distributed via the Post Office. Successful applicants will receive a letter explaining how to collect the cash in person. For those who prefer the money to be sent directly to their bank account, they must upload a bank statement showing their name and address as part of the application process.
It is vital to act promptly, as the council has emphasised that there is only one payment available per household and the overall funding is limited. Once all the allocated money has been awarded, the application scheme will close.
Additional Support and Funding Details
Islington Council has been allocated a total of £3,909,440.47 from the Household Support Fund for the period running from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. This £200 payment for pensioners forms part of that wider support package.
If an application is unsuccessful, the council will write to the applicant to explain the reason. The local authority has also stated it may refer residents to other local services that could provide further assistance.
Residents who need help completing the application form are encouraged to contact Islington Council directly by calling 020 7527 8222.
