The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a stark warning as it intensifies a campaign to help older people claim vital financial support they are owed. New data reveals a staggering £2.5 billion in Pension Credit is going unclaimed by eligible pensioners across the country.
Scale of the Unclaimed Support Crisis
According to the latest DWP figures, approximately 910,000 pensioner households who are entitled to Pension Credit are not receiving it. This means each of these households is missing out on an average of £4,300 per year, a sum described as a crucial income-related benefit for those past State Pension age.
Common Barriers and Eligibility Explained
Experts highlight that widespread misconceptions are a major barrier to claiming. Many older people incorrectly assume they are ineligible because they have savings or own their home outright. Research indicates that four in ten pensioner homeowners have never checked if they qualify for benefits beyond their State Pension.
To qualify for the main Guarantee Credit, your weekly income must be below £227.10 if you are single, or below £346.60 for a couple. These thresholds can be higher for individuals who are disabled, act as carers, or have specific housing costs.
For those who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016, there is also a Savings Credit element. This can provide an extra £17.30 per week for single people or £19.36 per week for couples, depending on your qualifying income.
How to Claim Your Entitlement
The DWP is urging all pensioners and their families to check their eligibility without delay. The simplest way is to use the free online Pension Credit calculator available on the official GOV.UK website.
Alternatively, you can start a claim by calling the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234. The department is ramping up its efforts to ensure this vital financial support reaches those who need it most.
