State Pensioners Urged to Claim £100 Weekly Income Boost
Pensioners Urged to Claim £100 Weekly Boost

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is making a fresh push to encourage state pensioners to check if they are eligible for a significant weekly income boost of around £100.

Regional Disparities in Pension Credit Uptake

This new drive comes after a landmark DWP analysis revealed stark regional differences across England in the number of pensioners claiming Pension Credit. The research found that between 60% and 70% of potentially eligible pensioners in the North and London are receiving the benefit.

However, this figure plummets to the mid-50% mark in the East and South of the country. The disparity is even more pronounced at a local level, with the North East having the highest uptake rate at 71%, compared to just 55% in the South West.

New Trial to Boost Claims

In response, the DWP has launched a new trial in partnership with charities Age UK and Independent Age. This initiative will see letters sent to 2,000 pensioners across England who have been identified as the most likely to be eligible for Pension Credit but are not currently claiming it.

This marks a shift in strategy for the Department. Previously, outreach letters targeted pensioners already receiving Housing Benefit. If this trial is successful, the DWP has indicated that further campaigns could be rolled out.

Government Commitment to Pensioners

Pensions Minister Torsten Bell stated: “We’re committed to supporting harder-up pensioners however we can. Pension Credit is a simple way to give those who need it the most some extra support with bills or a free TV licence.”

He added, “I'd urge anyone who thinks they, or anyone they know, might be able to claim Pension Credit, to take a few minutes out of their day to check and apply. This country’s pensioners deserve every penny they are entitled to.”

The push for greater uptake is particularly urgent. The annual national figure showing eligible households not claiming the benefit has increased from the previous year's estimate of up to 760,000 households.

With Pension Credit providing an average of £4,300 a year in extra financial support, this initiative could make a substantial difference to the lives of many pensioners.
