Police have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murdering former MP Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead at her home in Devon at the age of 78. The arrest was announced at a press conference by Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman on Friday evening.
Arrest and Motive
The suspect, a white British man, was taken into custody at an address in Newton Abbot. Longman confirmed that the death is not being treated as terror-related and stated there is “no information” at this time to suggest the murder was a “politically motivated crime.” The investigation continues as police work to establish the full circumstances.
Background on Ann Widdecombe
Ann Widdecombe, a longstanding Conservative MP, served as the Member of Parliament for Maidstone and The Weald from 1987 to 2010. She later switched allegiance to the Brexit Party in 2019 and subsequently moved to Reform UK. Since stepping down from Parliament, she had been living alone in Haytor, Devon.
Prime Minister’s Response
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer addressed the incident earlier, urging the public to “rise above any political differences” and focus on catching the killer. Speaking at Chequers, he said, “I think this is really important that this is a moment where we rise above any political differences, the political divide, and say the single most important thing at the moment is that all of us and the public help the police identify the individual suspected and make sure he’s arrested as quickly as possible. He’s clearly dangerous, and I implore everybody who’s got any information in relation to him to help the police with their inquiries, get him into police custody.”
Management Firm Statement
Miss Widdecombe’s management firm, Cloud 9, expressed devastation, saying, “We are absolutely devastated by this news following a very traumatic and upsetting 24 hours.” They urged anyone with information to contact the police.
Her agent also confirmed the news, stating, “It is with great sadness that today we announce the death of the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe, DSG. We send our deepest condolences to Ann's family and friends. We ask that the family's wish not to be contacted at this sad time is respected.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police have appealed for public assistance in locating the suspect, who remains at large. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
