A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was attacked in an alleyway near a busy city centre street. Police responded to a report that a woman was raped in an alleyway off Worcester's The Tything on May 2. Detectives believe the incident occurred between 6am and 8.30am.
The suspect remains in police custody this afternoon as investigations continue. West Mercia Police have announced increased officer patrols in the area, acknowledging that the incident will "bring great concern to the community."
Police Statement
A force spokesperson said: "An investigation has been launched following a report that a woman was raped in Worcester yesterday morning. It is believed the incident happened between 6am and 8.30am in an alleyway on The Tything. A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in police custody as enquiries continue."
Appeal for Information
Detective Inspector Lisa Tibbits added: "I know an incident like this will bring great concern to the community. I would like to reassure the public that a thorough investigation is now ongoing. I am appealing to anybody who may have any information that would help with our enquiries, however insignificant you feel it may be, to please contact the police."
As part of the investigation, officers have a man in custody who is assisting with enquiries. There will be an increased police presence in the area as enquiries are carried out, and specially trained officers are supporting the victim.
