Birmingham neighbourhoods Aston and Nechells sit next to each other in north Birmingham, yet their crime rates could not be more different. Aston is among the city's crime capitals, while Nechells is one of the quietest and safest areas, despite similar levels of poverty and deprivation.
Crime Statistics Reveal Stark Divide
In the 12 months to January, over 2,300 violent and sexual offences were recorded in Aston, including murder, robbery, rape, sexual assaults, and domestic abuse. This makes Aston the second highest-crime policing area in Birmingham, behind only Lozells and East Handsworth.
In contrast, Nechells recorded just 811 such incidents over the same period, placing it among the bottom 10 parts of the city for crime rates. While the Aston policing area has a larger population (around 24,000) compared to Nechells (around 16,000), the difference in crime figures remains stark given their proximity and similar living conditions.
Context and Contributing Factors
The disparity suggests issues unique to Aston, including violent gang disputes, drug turf wars, and other shootings and stabbings reported over the years. In October 2024, a gunman fired shots near Villa Park, with the target using a bystander as a human shield. In March last year, two people were hospitalised with gunshot wounds after a shooting outside FJ Lounge on Bickford Road.
Aston consistently ranks near the top of Birmingham's crime charts, alongside areas like Lozells, East Handsworth, and South Yardley. Despite the challenges, Nechells demonstrates that even deprived neighbourhoods can maintain low crime rates, offering a model for community safety.
