An asylum seeker has been fined for stealing goods from Primark in Birmingham and warned that his asylum claim could be at risk due to the offence.
Court Hearing
Andargachew Hailu, aged 32, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on April 15, where he pleaded guilty to shop theft. He required a translator during proceedings. The Ethiopian national had stolen items worth £325 from the Primark store in Birmingham city centre.
Defence Statement
Defence solicitor Ms Farzana Begum told the court that Hailu was "financially struggling" and suffers from depression. She explained that his girlfriend is 28 weeks pregnant and he had purchased items for her but needed a larger size. The court heard that Hailu is unemployed and receives just £50 per week in asylum seeker allowance.
Items were recovered by security, and Hailu was described as "extremely remorseful" for his actions.
Judge's Warning
Deputy District Judge Olwen Davis issued a stern warning to Hailu, stating: "Even relatively trivial offences like this have the capability of affecting your asylum claim." She added: "You really need to keep out of trouble if you are seeking asylum."
Penalty
Hailu, of Rugby, Warwickshire, was fined £50 plus £60 in costs and surcharge, bringing the total to £110. The court emphasised that any future offences could further jeopardise his immigration status.
