BGT Star Dies After Arrest, Inquest Hears

Britain's Got Talent Star's Tragic Death Following Arrest

A dancer who achieved fame on the popular television show Britain's Got Talent tragically died from hanging just three days after she was arrested on suspicion of a sexual offence, a coroner's inquest has heard. Kerri-Anne Donaldson, who captivated audiences as part of the dance group Kings and Queens during the 2014 season, reaching the semi-finals, was discovered deceased at her residence in Farnborough, Hampshire, on June 7, 2023.

Arrest and Subsequent Events

The inquest proceedings held at Winchester revealed that the 38-year-old performer was taken into custody on June 4 and questioned at a police station regarding an alleged sexual offence, which she firmly denied. Following her release from police custody, Ms. Donaldson failed to return to her home, prompting her concerned family to report her as a missing person. She was subsequently located at a Travelodge hotel in Woking, Surrey.

Her sister, Cara Donaldson, provided emotional testimony at the hearing, describing how upon arrival at the hotel, Ms. Donaldson was being transported to hospital via ambulance after having ingested an overdose of medication. Cara recounted that her sister informed an emergency doctor at St Peter's Hospital in north Surrey of her intention to end her own life, with Cara expressing, "I just wanted to hug her."

Family's Heartbreaking Account

Cara further detailed that when she drove her sister home on June 6, Ms. Donaldson confessed that she had resolved to take her own life immediately after leaving the police station. The family expressed frustration, stating they received no care plan or guidance on how to support her upon discharge from the hospital. Cara spent the evening with her sister, hesitant to leave her alone, and pleaded, "If you do anything, Kerri, that will always be on my shoulders."

In a poignant moment, Cara shared that her sister joked in response, assuring she would not harm herself, which led Cara to depart. One of their final exchanges included a message from Ms. Donaldson saying, "Thanks for everything today" accompanied by a heart emoji, leading Cara to believe she was okay. The next morning, when her sister did not answer phone calls, Cara went to her home and discovered a note at the top of the stairs instructing, "Call 999, do not come in. I am sorry."

Allegations and Personal Tributes

Regarding the allegation, Cara stated that her sister maintained her innocence, describing the accusation as "all been constructed." She painted a vivid picture of Ms. Donaldson's character, saying, "Heart of gold, full of fun, brought happiness to life, especially mine, career-driven, adored her family, adored her friends, fantastic dance teacher, everyone loved her." Cara highlighted her sister's television appearances and her primary passion for choreographing dance routines.

Medical Findings and Inquest Continuation

The inquest was informed that a post-mortem examination determined the cause of death as hanging. Additionally, the examination detected non-fatal levels of medication in her bloodstream, consistent with a prior overdose. The hearing into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing as authorities seek to fully understand the tragic sequence of events.
