Ranveer Adil, 44, has been fined £80 by magistrates after police discovered cannabis at his home in Bilston, Wolverhampton. Adil told the court he was growing the class B drug for his own pain relief.
Adil was arrested on July 18 when police attended his Fraser Street home for unrelated matters and found the cannabis during a search of the property. The case was heard at Dudley Magistrates' Court on August 27.
Defence cites pain relief and past trauma
His defence solicitor, Vaughn Whistance, told the court: "He was growing it for his own pain relief."
The court heard that Adil suffered serious injuries in a road collision 20 years ago and was later attacked and stabbed while working as a security guard, which led to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Fine and court costs imposed
In addition to the £80 fine, magistrates ordered Adil to pay a £32 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs. The total financial penalty amounts to £197.
The incident took place at Adil's residence on Fraser Street in Bilston, a town within the City of Wolverhampton. Police had initially attended the address for unrelated matters before the cannabis discovery was made.
Court outcome and next steps
The sentencing at Dudley Magistrates' Court concluded with the fine and associated costs being imposed. Adil did not receive a custodial sentence.
The case highlights how courts treat cannabis cultivation even when the defendant claims it was for personal medicinal use. The fine and surcharge are now due to be paid by Adil following the court's decision on August 27.
