The Met Office has urged people in Birmingham to stay "safe" as the heatwave intensifies. In response, several outdoor sessions and businesses have decided to cancel or close early. Debbie Tye announced on Facebook: "Good afternoon all… Due to the extreme weather (heat) tomorrow and people saying, they’re not turning up at the church because of the journey in the heat, I am cancelling St Martin’s Social Care Project’s Games Afternoon." She added that the Craft Group will still run from 10am as usual, advising everyone to "Stay cool and hydrated!!"
Business Closures and Cancellations
Much Cards and Gifts in Chelmsley Wood posted on Facebook: "Thursday 13th due to heat we are closing at 4pm. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. Normal hours Friday onwards." Meanwhile, Mark Peters said: "Tai chi in Cotteridge Park will be cancelled Thursday 13th August for health and safety as temperature 30+ with no shade."
Splash Pad Outage and Travel Disruption
The Walsall Arboretum splash pad has broken down due to an unexpected technical fault. A post explained: "Unfortunately, due to an unexpected technical fault, the splash pad at Walsall Arboretum is currently out of service. We know this will be disappointing, particularly with the hot weather today, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and we’ll provide an update once the splash pad is operational again."
Transport for West Midlands has warned drivers and commuters to plan accordingly, with "significant disruption to travel" expected on roads. The combination of extreme heat and travel issues is likely to affect daily routines across the city, and further cancellations may follow as the heatwave continues.
