'Cat Bin Lady' Mary Bale Still Lives in Midlands, Haunted by Notoriety
'Cat Bin Lady' Mary Bale Still Lives in Midlands

Mary Bale, the woman who became infamous as the 'Cat Bin Lady' after a 2010 viral video showed her placing a cat in a wheelie bin, reportedly still lives in the Midlands and has never overcome her notoriety. Now in her early 60s, Bale was 45 and working as an unmarried bank employee when she was captured on CCTV stroking a neighbour's cat before suddenly grabbing it by the neck and depositing it into a bin.

Life After the Incident

The incident sparked global outrage, transforming Bale's life permanently. The cat, Lola, emerged largely unharmed and lived a contented life until age 16, passing away about five years ago. Bale, however, continues to be recognised worldwide and now lives as a recluse in a suburban area of Coventry, where some neighbours remain unaware of her past.

A neighbour, speaking anonymously to the Daily Mail, revealed they have known Bale throughout the years. 'She was vilified by people across the world. Most people have long forgotten it but not everyone and she doesn't feel forgiven,' they said. The source added that Bale quit her job and 'never reestablished a proper career.'

Neighbour Accounts

'She leads a very, very quiet life now and rarely speaks to anyone. I think she remains deeply embarrassed and thinks that's all she will ever be known for,' the neighbour continued. Another neighbour named Diana noted the incident had 'plagued' Bale and she had 'never been able to live down the shame.' Diana, a pet owner herself, expressed sympathy, saying Bale 'at times struggles.'

A further neighbour referenced Bale's father passing away around the time of the controversy. 'Obviously it was a weird thing for her to do but when learned that her father was dying at the time - he passed just a few months later - it was clear she was not in a good place at the time she did it. Those of us who know about her are broadly sympathetic,' they said.

Legal Consequences

In 2021, Bale received a £250 fine at Coventry Magistrates' Court and was ordered to pay the RSPCA's costs of £1,171 after pleading guilty to causing unnecessary suffering. She was also handed a five-year ban on keeping animals. At the time, Bale maintained she did 'not deserve to be hated,' stating, 'I really don't see what everyone is getting so excited about. It's just a cat.'

She explained her actions as 'a split second of madness,' saying she thought it would be funny to put the cat in the bin and expected it to wriggle out. The outrage intensified, with a Facebook group demanding her death and some comparing her unfavourably to historical figures.

Apology and Aftermath

Bale later issued a statement saying she was 'profoundly sorry' for the upset caused. 'I cannot explain why I did this, it is completely out of character and I certainly did not intend to cause any distress to Lola or her owners,' she said. During court proceedings, her defence solicitor noted her actions were 'impulsive and irrational' while her father was seriously ill.

Lola's owners, Darryl and Stephanie, still live in the area and have forgiven Bale. It is understood Bale has not obtained another pet since the incident. Following the abuse and threats, she withdrew into a private life and has remained largely out of the public eye.
