A man has been charged with the rape and murder of a pensioner after the woman was found dead at a property in the South West.
Edward Holden, aged 36 and of Alexandra Place in Penzance, was arrested by officers following the grim discovery of the woman's body at a property in the village of Ashton, near Helston, in the early hours of Friday (May 29). The victim was understood to be in her eighties when she died.
He has since been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Truro Magistrates’ Court on Monday (June 1), according to Cornwall Live.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed officers were called to a property in Ashton shortly after midnight on Friday. A statement released by the force read: "We recognise that an incident such as this will cause worry amongst our communities. We would specifically request that any social media commentary is avoided, and we ask for your support as we further our investigations."
The investigation is ongoing, and police have urged the public to avoid speculation on social media while inquiries continue.
