A thug who consumed a litre of vodka and cocaine before a violent outburst at a Tesco store in Staffordshire has been sentenced. Carl Walker, 48, shoved a shopper into a sandwich chiller after a staff member asked him to leave. When police arrived, he assaulted one officer and spat at another.
Incident at Tesco Express
North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard that the incident occurred at Tesco Express in Newcastle on October 9. Prosecutor Christopher Redmond said witnesses described Walker as appearing drunk. A staff member asked him to leave, but he ignored the request and continued his disruptive behavior. He pushed the staff member, and when a customer intervened, Walker pushed him twice, causing him to fall into the sandwich chiller. The staff member punched Walker in self-defense, knocking him to the floor, where he was restrained until police arrived.
Assault on Police
Upon arrest, Walker struck an officer while being taken out of the police vehicle, apologizing immediately. He later spat in the direction of an officer at the hospital. Walker admitted to consuming three bags of cocaine and one litre of vodka before the incident.
Court Proceedings
Walker, of Norwich Place, Bentilee, pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting an emergency worker by beating and two counts of assault by beating. His defense lawyer, Alan Dawson, noted that Walker struggles with monkey dust, cocaine, and self-harm. The court also heard that Walker was subject to a suspended sentence for breaching a non-molestation order and criminal damage.
Sentencing
Magistrates extended the operational period of his suspended sentence from 12 to 18 months and ordered him to pay £250 compensation to the officer he spat at.
