DWP PIP Payments Could Be Suspended for Claimants Taking Holidays Abroad
The Department for Work and Pensions has issued a warning that Personal Independence Payment claimants could have their benefits stopped if they travel abroad without proper notification. PIP recipients must inform the DWP about holiday plans or risk losing their entitlement, with regular payments potentially being suspended or terminated entirely.
Four-Week Travel Threshold
Those leaving the country or planning to leave for longer than four weeks - even for holiday purposes - are specifically warned that the break may affect their PIP entitlement. The Labour Party government website clearly states: "This change may affect the claimant's entitlement to PIP. We will need to know the date the claimant is leaving the country, how long they are planning to be out of the country, which country they are going to and why they are going abroad."
Required Information for DWP
Claimants must provide specific details to the DWP including:
- The exact date of departure from the country
- The planned duration of their absence
- The destination country
- The reason for traveling abroad
Contact the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433 to report any change of circumstances. The telephone lines operate from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.
Other Circumstances Affecting PIP Payments
Beyond international travel, the DWP has established several other scenarios that can impact PIP payments:
Hospital Stays: Both components of PIP cease to be payable 28 days after a claimant is admitted to an NHS hospital. However, privately funded patients remain unaffected by these regulations and can continue receiving both PIP components.
Care Home Residency: The daily living component of PIP stops being payable after 28 days of residency in a care home where accommodation costs are covered by public or local funds. The PIP mobility component can continue to be paid in these situations. Those who entirely self-fund their care home placement are not impacted by these specific regulations.
If a claimant is already in a care home at their date of entitlement, the PIP daily living component will not become payable until they depart the facility.
Comprehensive Guidance Available
The DWP provides detailed guidance covering all changes in circumstances that might affect PIP payments. Claimants are strongly advised to consult this comprehensive resource to determine whether they need to contact the DWP about their specific situation.
Failure to report relevant changes in circumstances, including extended international travel, could result in significant financial consequences for PIP recipients who depend on these benefits for daily living and mobility support.
