Thousands to receive DWP benefits early for Christmas 2025
Early DWP payments due for Christmas and New Year

Thousands of households across the UK will see their benefit payments arrive a day or two early this week due to the upcoming bank holidays.

Revised Payment Dates for the Festive Period

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has adjusted its payment schedule because Christmas Day and Boxing Day are both bank holidays this year. If your payment is normally due on December 25th or 26th, you will receive it on Christmas Eve, Wednesday 24 December 2025.

This change affects a range of support payments, including Universal Credit, Child Benefit, and tax credits. For those expecting a payment on New Year's Day, the funds will land in accounts a day early, on New Year's Eve, Wednesday 31 December. Recipients in Scotland with a payment date of January 2nd should expect to be paid on that day as usual.

A Longer Gap Until Your Next Payment

While the early arrival provides welcome funds ahead of the festive break, claimants are urged to budget carefully. The advance means there will be a longer than usual gap until the next scheduled payment in January.

This financial timing comes at a difficult period for many. The ongoing cost-of-living crisis means balancing seasonal expenses with everyday essentials is a major challenge for numerous families.

Charity Warns of Christmas Debt Pressures

The debt charity StepChange has issued a stark warning, estimating that more than 14 million adults in the UK will find Christmas unaffordable this year.

The organisation cautions that the financial strain of the holidays often forces people to turn to credit, potentially trapping them in a cycle of debt that can take years to escape. For those relying on state benefits or pensions, this time of year can bring significant financial stress rather than celebration.

Universal Credit claimants, who are paid monthly, should note that their payment dates this festive season differ slightly from some other benefits. All recipients are advised to check their bank accounts and plan their budgets accordingly for the extended period until their next payment.
