Tragic Death of 12-Year-Old Girl Linked to Snapchat Bullying
A coroner's court has heard the heartbreaking details surrounding the death of a 12-year-old girl who was found at her home in West Sussex. Amelia Bath, described as a bright and funny child, passed away on March 6, with the provisional cause of death confirmed as hanging.
Coroner's Findings and Family Tributes
During a hearing at West Sussex Coroner’s Court in Horsham, area coroner Joseph Turner stated that the facts and circumstances of Amelia's death were unnatural. A statement from a coroner’s officer revealed she was sadly found deceased at her home address by hanging.
Amelia's aunt, Lisa Marsh, paid a moving tribute to her beautiful niece, describing her as a kind-hearted and loving girl who filled every room with warmth and laughter. She said, "She had the most beautiful soul and so much life ahead of her. She was deeply loved, and she loved deeply in return."
Snapchat Bullying and Community Support
Friends later informed Amelia's parents that she had been targeted by bullies on Snapchat in the weeks leading up to her death. This revelation has sparked concerns about online safety and the impact of social media on young people.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe fundraiser launched by Ms Marsh has raised over £16,000 to assist with funeral costs. Additional funds will be donated in Amelia's memory to the children’s hospice Chestnut Tree House, supporting other families in need.
Police Investigation and Ongoing Proceedings
A spokesman for Sussex Police confirmed that officers are reviewing the wider circumstances of Amelia's death, though it is not being treated as suspicious. The police are working alongside schools and partner agencies to provide support to the family and others affected by this loss.
The inquest has been adjourned until a pre-inquest review scheduled for June 17, where further details may emerge about the events leading up to this devastating incident.
