Soham Killer Ian Huntley Remains in Serious Condition Following Prison Assault

Soham murderer Ian Huntley is still seriously ill two days after a violent attack in a maximum security prison. The incident occurred at HMP Frankland in Durham on Thursday morning, where an inmate allegedly struck Huntley repeatedly over the head with a metal bar.

Police Statement on Huntley's Condition

Durham Constabulary issued a statement on Saturday morning, confirming there had been no change in Huntley's hospital condition overnight. A spokesperson stated, "The 52-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious condition, there have been no changes overnight." The force has declined to identify the suspect but confirmed a man in his mid-40s was detained in the prison following the assault, though not yet arrested.

Details of the Alleged Attacker

According to reports, the alleged attacker is triple killer Anthony Russell, who was sentenced to a whole life tariff in 2021 for the murders of Julie Williams, 58, her son David Williams, 32, and pregnant Nicole McGregor, 31. Russell also raped Ms. McGregor. Witnesses claim Russell shouted "I've done it, I've done it" after the attack on Huntley.

Background on Ian Huntley's Crimes and Previous Attacks

Ian Huntley, a former school caretaker, was convicted for the murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire, on August 4, 2002. He is serving a life sentence with a minimum of 40 years. This is not the first attempt on Huntley's life; in 2010, robber Damien Fowkes slashed him with a homemade weapon, causing a severe neck wound requiring 21 stitches. Fowkes later described Huntley as a "notorious child killer, both inside prison and in society in general."

Security Measures and Ongoing Investigation

Huntley had reportedly been under close observation to prevent such attacks, given his high-profile status. The assault highlights ongoing security concerns within the prison system. Durham Constabulary continues to investigate the incident, with no further updates on potential charges or the suspect's status at this time.
