Inquest Concludes Suicide of Devoted Father in Truro Playground

A coroner's inquest has heard the tragic details surrounding the death of a 47-year-old father, Terry Howe, who was found deceased in a children's playground in Truro. The hearing at Pydar House in Cornwall revealed that Mr. Howe was discovered unresponsive in the play area of Boscawen Park in the early hours of August 8 last year.

Family Tributes to a 'Kind and Caring' Soul

Terry Howe's family paid heartfelt tributes during the proceedings, describing him as an "amazing" dad who dedicated his life to his loved ones. His wife, Danielle Howe, stated that her husband would "do anything to help anyone out", including neighbours and family members. She recalled, "Terry was a forklift driver and would never take a sick day at work. He was always on the go - he was just perfect."

A statement from Terry's mother and sister, read at the inquest, echoed these sentiments, portraying him as a "kind, caring, gentle soul who would do anything for anyone". They emphasized his role as a "fantastic husband" and "amazing family man" who spent most of his time with his loving family, adding, "We will always remember Terry's beautiful smile, his kindness and pure joy he always brought into our lives."

Circumstances Leading to the Tragic Incident

The inquest heard that Terry Howe had been experiencing low mood in the weeks prior to his death. Evidence presented indicated that he had become increasingly paranoid after using recreational drugs on a night out the previous weekend. Despite this, he had enjoyed a pleasant evening with his family on August 7, with his wife noting they were in a "really good place" in their marriage and "the happiest we've ever been".

In the early hours of August 8, Terry got up around 1am to smoke a cigarette and made a pot noodle for his son. He then informed his family he was going for a walk but did not return. Shortly after, his family found him unresponsive in the children's play area of Boscawen Park. Police and paramedics attended the scene promptly and performed CPR, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Coroner's Findings and Conclusion

Andrew Cox, the senior coroner for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, detailed the events in his findings. He stated, "He had been low in mood in the time prior to his death and there is also evidence that I accept of recent recreational or illicit drug use which appears to have worsened his mood and made him paranoid." Mr. Cox noted that Terry had expressed thoughts about ending his life in the days before his death.

After reviewing all evidence, the coroner found no indication of third-party involvement or suspicious circumstances. He concluded that Terry Howe intended to take his own life, recording a formal conclusion of suicide on Tuesday, March 17. The case highlights the profound impact of mental health struggles and substance use on individuals and their families.
