Lozells and East Handsworth have been identified as the most dangerous part of Birmingham, according to the latest police data. Residents in this area face the highest likelihood of becoming victims of crime, with a staggering 2,367 violent and sexual offences recorded in the 12 months leading up to January. This equates to an average of six serious crimes every single day.
Crime Capital of Birmingham
The analysis of West Midlands Police data by BirminghamLive revealed that Lozells and East Handsworth top the list for serious offences, which include murder, stabbings, sexual assaults, domestic abuse, and violent fights. Aston followed closely with 2,323 offences, while South Yardley was the only other area to exceed 2,000, recording 2,023. Stockland Green narrowly missed this threshold with 1,986 offences.
Gang Violence and Deprivation
These north Birmingham areas have long struggled with gang-related violence, with deprivation playing a significant role in the high crime rates. Many streets in Lozells, East Handsworth, and Aston are among the poorest in the country. Youths often grow up in broken homes and face limited opportunities, contributing to the cycle of crime.
The data provides a stark indication of the safety challenges residents face daily. While thousands of serious offences were reported across the city, these areas consistently appear at the top of crime lists, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and community support.
