MAFS Australia's Luke Reveals PTSD Struggles After Mel Relationship
Married At First Sight Australia's Luke Fourniotis has bravely opened up about the significant mental health challenges he has faced following his split from co-star Mel Akbay, revealing that the experience left him with symptoms of PTSD.
The Troubled Relationship
Luke entered the experiment with hopes of being matched with "an optimistic, energetic, bubbly girl" for a lifelong partnership. Instead, he was paired with Mel, whose behavior on the show has attracted considerable backlash from viewers. Their relationship began on a rocky note when Luke forgot the wedding rings and arrived late, leaving Mel waiting alone at the altar.
Despite efforts to make things work, the couple struggled to establish any romantic connection and ultimately left the experiment during the third commitment ceremony. Now, as the show airs for UK audiences, Luke has shared the emotional toll of watching their relationship unfold on television.
Mental Health Impact
In a candid interview with Daily Mail Australia, Luke disclosed that while he received "so much support" throughout filming, the initial weeks were particularly difficult. Reflecting on the experience, he stated, "I've been given so much support like throughout the show, and for some reason like the first week, second week, I wasn't enjoying it at all... And I realised I feel like I actually had a bit like of PTSD."
Luke described feeling profoundly "alone and isolated" during their honeymoon, noting that Mel never truly opened up to him, even on a basic friendship level. He expressed frustration at the "endless effort on my end to try and be friends with her," which contributed to his emotional distress.
Emotional Suppression and Reflection
After leaving the show, Luke admitted to suppressing his emotions about the entire experience. Watching the episodes back proved to be "tough to watch" and left him feeling upset as he relived the challenging moments. However, in a final reflection, Luke shared that he does not regret appearing on the program.
He explained that he is now in a better headspace and has "come to terms" with everything that transpired, indicating a journey toward healing and acceptance.
Mel's Response
Mel Akbay has also addressed her time on the show, issuing a public apology via Instagram for her behavior. She wrote, "Over the past few weeks I've watched parts of myself on TV that have been difficult to see. There were moments where I didn't communicate well and came across insensitive. For that, I'm truly sorry to anyone who felt hurt or offended."
She specifically apologized for not developing romantic feelings for Luke, stating, "Lastly, I'm sorry for not developing romantic feelings for Luke and that the experiment didn't go the way we both would've hoped. Luke is a good person and I genuinely wish him the best. At the end of the day, I'm still learning like everyone else."
This revelation highlights the often-overlooked psychological impacts of reality television, with Luke's story serving as a poignant reminder of the real human emotions behind the screen.
