A 27-year-old Sudanese national has been arrested by National Crime Agency investigators in connection with a tragic small boat crossing of the English Channel that resulted in the deaths of four migrants. The arrest occurred this morning, Friday 10 April 2026, at the Manston processing centre in Kent.

The four victims—two men and two women whose identities have not yet been released—were attempting to board a water taxi when the incident occurred. According to the National Crime Agency, smugglers are increasingly using such vessels to evade police detection. The tragedy took place off the coast of Saint Etienne au Mont, south of Boulogne-sur-Mer near Calais.
In addition to the fatalities, thirty-eight people were returned to the French shore following the incident. The suspect is being held in custody and is due to be interviewed on suspicion of 'endangering another during a journey by sea to the UK' under the new Border, Security, Asylum and Immigration Act.
