Mandatory Eyesight and Cognitive Tests Proposed for UK Drivers Over 70
Mandatory Tests Proposed for Drivers Over 70 in UK

The UK government is considering introducing two new mandatory tests for all drivers aged 70 and over, affecting more than 6 million license holders in England. According to Labour Party government figures, the number of full license holders aged 70 and above in Great Britain has surpassed 6.3 million, marking a 60 percent increase since 2012.

Proposed Measures to Enhance Road Safety

Amid concerns about deteriorating eyesight among elderly motorists, the government is exploring the implementation of both mandatory eyesight checks and cognitive testing. A Department for Transport spokesperson stated: "Road safety is an absolute priority, and we are committed to ensuring all drivers are fit to drive safely. We continue to consider evidence on how best to protect all road users while supporting people to remain mobile and independent."

Public Reaction Divided

The proposal has elicited mixed responses from the public. One motorist who responded to the government's consultation expressed full support: "Now in my 70s I wholeheartedly agree with these changes. My eyesight is nigh on perfect but so many people do not have good eyesight, do not have regular eye tests and do not wear glasses even when they have them and need them."

However, another respondent raised concerns about fairness: "Previously, older drivers were classed as low risk, with better insurance offers. Young drivers are known to have more accidents. I've seen reports that suggest screen use causes sight problems. Sight tests should be required for all, not a discriminated few."

Current Licensing Rules

Under current regulations, driving entitlement expires at age 70 in Great Britain. Drivers must renew their license every three years after turning 70. To renew, they must legally declare that they meet eyesight standards and confirm whether they have any listed medical conditions. The consultation document notes that "several options could potentially improve the road safety outcomes for older drivers and other road users who could be involved in collisions with older drivers," including mandatory eyesight tests or cognitive assessments at license renewal.
