West Bromwich Mother Sentenced to Life for Murdering Infant Daughter

A 31-year-old mother from West Bromwich has been handed a life sentence for murdering her two-month-old daughter in what the court described as a 'sudden fit of rage'. Zara Arsalan, also known as Sharandeep Talwandi, inflicted extreme violence on her newborn Harleen 'Bambi' Bains, resulting in fatal injuries at their home in Caddick Crescent.

Details of the Tragic Assault

The attack occurred when Arsalan, feeling tired and stressed, lost her temper as Harleen cried. In a chilling assault lasting mere seconds, she shook the baby viciously and banged her head repeatedly against a hard surface. Mr Justice Cavanagh KC, sentencing at Coventry Crown Court, stated that the violence was ferocious and that Harleen, described as 'tiny', would have suffered terrible pain and fear.

Medical evidence revealed Harleen sustained a skull fracture, brain injury, broken collarbone, leg fracture, and spinal damage. The injuries were catastrophic and irreversible, with the assault involving blunt force blows and rough handling far outside normal care. The judge noted that Arsalan had previously caused a rib fracture to Harleen through rough handling days before the fatal incident, yet failed to seek help.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Arsalan denied murder but was convicted by jurors following a trial earlier this year. On Thursday, March 12, she was jailed for life with a minimum term of 19 years. Mr Justice Cavanagh KC emphasized that Harleen should have had a long and happy life ahead, highlighting the vulnerability of a two-month-old baby reliant on others.

The judge stated, 'I'm sure that you had no intent to harm Harleen until the very moment you did. You acted in a sudden fit of rage.' He added that Arsalan did not care if she killed her daughter, as the violence was so severe that death was a real prospect.

Background and Aftermath

Arsalan lived with Harleen and the baby's father, Jatinder Bains, 31, whose relationship had become stormy prior to the incident. On July 23, 2020, Mr Bains dialled 999 after Arsalan inflicted the fatal injuries minutes earlier. Despite attempts at resuscitation, Harleen was in a coma with unsurvivable injuries and died the next day.

Tragically, Mr Bains died by suicide in August 2022. During police investigations, Arsalan provided conflicting and untruthful accounts, initially claiming Harleen wriggled out of her arms and later falsely accusing Mr Bains of the assault. The judge dismissed these as false narratives designed to shift blame.

Arsalan, who was 25 at the time of the murder and had no previous convictions, has been remanded into custody. The case underscores the devastating consequences of uncontrolled anger and the critical need for support for struggling parents.
