Birmingham Parents Found Guilty in Preventable Death of Seriously Ill Son
A couple from Birmingham has been convicted after a court determined they could have prevented the tragic death of their seriously ill 12-year-old son. Tamara Thomas was found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter at Birmingham Crown Court following the passing of her son Joshua in December 2022.
Delayed Emergency Call Proved Fatal
The court heard detailed evidence that Joshua had displayed clear symptoms of severe diabetic ketoacidosis for several hours before his death. Both parents, Tamara and Damion Thomas, noticed their son was unwell, but Tamara only dialed 999 hours later after observing his lips had turned white. Joshua was rushed to hospital on December 9, 2022, but sadly died in the early hours of the following day.
Verdicts and Additional Charges
While Tamara Thomas was convicted of gross negligence manslaughter, her husband Damion was found not guilty of that specific charge. However, Damion was found guilty of child cruelty. Additionally, both parents were convicted of neglect concerning another child in their care.
Investigator's Statement on Preventable Tragedy
Lead investigator Vicki Harris emphasized the preventable nature of this case. She stated, "Both parents were aware of the signs and symptoms of diabetes, and expert medical evidence confirmed their son's death would have been avoidable if medical help had been sought earlier." Harris described the investigation as highly emotive, noting it involved over three years of work to safeguard other children and analyze complex medical evidence.
Tamara and Damion Thomas are scheduled to be sentenced in June, concluding a lengthy legal process that has highlighted critical issues in parental responsibility and medical neglect.
