A mother and father have been sentenced to prison for the manslaughter of their 11-year-old son, who died from a treatable condition after they failed to seek medical help. The boy, who had a long-standing illness, passed away at the family home in a West Midlands city in 2022.
Details of the Case
The parents, aged 42 and 44, were found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court. The court heard that the boy suffered from a serious medical condition that required ongoing treatment, but his parents neglected to take him to hospital despite his deteriorating health. Paramedics were called to the home on the day of his death, but he could not be saved.
According to the prosecution, the boy had been unwell for several days, with symptoms including difficulty breathing and extreme fatigue. The parents failed to call for medical assistance, instead relying on home remedies. The judge described their actions as a "prolonged and deliberate failure" to protect their child.
Sentencing and Impact
Both parents were sentenced to seven years in prison. The judge stated that they had shown a "callous disregard" for their son's welfare. In a victim impact statement, the boy's grandmother expressed her devastation, saying, "He was a bright, loving boy who deserved so much better."
The case has sparked renewed calls for better awareness of child neglect and the importance of seeking timely medical care. West Midlands Police Detective Inspector said, "This is a tragic case where a young life was lost due to the inexcusable actions of those who should have protected him."
