A petition on the UK Parliament website is calling for new meat labelling rules in major supermarkets, including Aldi, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl, and Morrisons. The petition urges the Labour Party government to require that meat from stunned and non-stunned animals be clearly labelled throughout the food chain.
Petition Details
The petition, which has garnered over 115,000 signatures, states: "We think it should be required that the labelling of non-stunned and stunned meat be clearly labelled throughout the food chain." It explains that this would include leading supermarkets and other outlets such as shops, suppliers, fast food restaurants, and eateries.
Consumer Choice and Transparency
The petition emphasises the importance of consumer choice and transparency, particularly for religious and ethical reasons. It argues that no one should be forced to consume food that does not meet their ethical or religious choices, and that they should have the right to choose without prejudice.
Government Response
The government responded to the petition on 22 December 2025, stating: "Whilst there is no regulatory requirement for labelling of meat from animals slaughtered without stunning, any information of this nature must be accurate and must not be misleading to the consumer." The petition has now closed, but with over 100,000 signatures, it qualifies for a debate in Parliament. The UK is currently waiting for a debate date, which is expected within 104 days.
