A new study has named the most deprived parts of the West Midlands, highlighting where life is toughest for families facing financial struggles, debt, and food insecurity. Surprisingly, some areas often considered poor did not rank as high as expected.
Birmingham Ranks Second Nationally
Birmingham is the second most deprived area in England, according to the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government study, which analyzed income, employment, education, health, crime, housing, and environment. Only Blackpool ranks higher.
Black Country Areas Outside Top 20
Despite common perceptions, no parts of the Black Country made the top 20 poorest list. Walsall ranked 27th, Wolverhampton 32nd, and Sandwell—often seen as one of the poorest—placed 54th. Other Midlands cities in the top 20 include Nottingham (18th) and Stoke-on-Trent (19th).
Richest Areas in the Midlands
At the opposite end, South Staffordshire, Lichfield, Bromsgrove, and Stratford-upon-Avon are among the least deprived areas in England, with very few residents experiencing deprivation.
