A woman described as "pure evil" by the mother of her victim has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering her four-year-old stepson, a child who loved and trusted her.
A Fatal Assault and a Web of Lies
Tegan McGhee, 32, can now be named after a judge lifted an order preventing the publication of her identity. Mr Justice Paul McDermott handed down the life sentence for the murder of Mason O'Connell Conway at a house in Rathbane, Limerick city, Ireland, in March 2021.
The court heard that the child's father, 36-year-old John Paul O'Connell, had previously been sentenced to seven years in prison. He pleaded guilty to charges of endangerment, neglect, and impeding McGhee's apprehension or prosecution, knowing she had murdered his son.
The tragic sequence of events began on 13 March 2021, when O'Connell called emergency services. He claimed his son had fallen from the top bunk of his bed an hour earlier and could not be woken. Paramedics who rushed to the scene found the little boy unresponsive on his bedroom floor.
A History of Abuse and a Mother's Anguish
Despite being rushed to hospital and undergoing emergency surgery, Mason died three days later. Medical staff discovered a multitude of bruises in various stages of healing across his face, head, torso, and legs, clear evidence of non-accidental harm.
During the trial, it emerged that Mason had endured weeks of physical abuse. In the four days leading up to his death, he was confined to his room. McGhee finally "snapped", violently shaking the boy and slamming his head onto the floor. He also suffered a blunt force injury to his abdomen, which caused a laceration to his liver. A pathologist stated either injury could have been fatal.
In a heartbreaking victim impact statement, Mason's mother, Elizabeth Conway, described her son as a "perfect little boy" with an infectious laugh and beautiful brown eyes. She recalled the agonising decision to turn off his life support after doctors said nothing more could be done.
Ms Conway revealed that before life support was withdrawn, O'Connell and McGhee asked to be left alone with Mason's body. "I can only imagine what they were saying to my poor child's lifeless body," she said. She stated his life was stolen by somebody he "loved and trusted".
Justice Served and Concurrent Sentences
Mr Justice McDermott extended his deepest sympathies to Mason's mother and extended family. In addition to the life sentence for murder, he sentenced McGhee to four years and six months for two counts of child cruelty in the weeks and months before the killing. These sentences will run concurrently with the life term.
The judge lifted the order that had previously protected McGhee's identity, allowing the public to know the name of the woman convicted of this horrific crime. The case highlights the devastating consequences of child abuse and the profound betrayal of trust within a family setting.
