Three teenagers have died in separate open water incidents across the UK during the Bank Holiday weekend, sparking renewed warnings about the dangers of swimming in lakes and rivers.
Incident at Kingsbury Water Park
A 15-year-old girl was pulled from a lake at Kingsbury Water Park, near Sutton Coldfield, at 7:20 pm on Monday, May 26. Emergency services attended the scene, but the teenager was pronounced dead. The incident occurred at the popular park off Bodymoor Heath Lane.
Leadbeater Dam Tragedy
Earlier that same day, at around 3:15 pm, a 13-year-old boy was recovered from Leadbeater Dam in Halifax, West Yorkshire. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Local authorities are investigating the circumstances.
Declan Sawyer's Death
On Sunday, May 25, 15-year-old Declan Sawyer got into difficulty in Swanholme Lakes in Lincolnshire at 2:30 pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Declan's parents have issued a heartfelt plea for water safety awareness, especially during hot weather.
Declan's father, Carl, said: "Our darling boy Declan was a funny and outgoing young man who loved his fishing and his football. He had a very cheeky smile and the personality to match. He was very much loved by his friends and family, and will be missed dearly by many."
He added: "With his tragic and unexpected passing on Sunday, May 24 at Swanholme Lakes, we would like to raise awareness about children playing near any rivers or lakes in the hot weather. Please can all parents, friends and family make their children aware of the dangers surrounding water."
The family has asked for privacy as they grieve their loss.
Water Safety Warnings
These tragedies come as the UK experiences record-breaking temperatures, leading many to seek cooling off in open water. However, such environments pose hidden dangers, including cold water shock, strong currents, and submerged objects. Authorities urge parents to talk to their children about the risks and to supervise them near any body of water.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of all those affected by these devastating losses.
