A man described as "loving" and "kind" was found dead after falling from a cliff, following a strained relationship with his parents over his sexuality. Fabio Pedranzini, 55, was discovered in a cove in Cornwall in March last year after being 'disowned' by his family for being gay.
Background and Relationship
An inquest into his death revealed that Fabio had been married to a woman for 30 years before coming out as gay to his family eight years prior. His partner, Mark Riley, testified that the Italian national was subsequently 'disowned' by his immediate family, who were 'ashamed' of his same-sex relationship. Mr. Riley reported Fabio missing to Devon and Cornwall Police after he vanished from their holiday caravan at Upton Towans near Gwithian, Hayle. Two days later, on March 23, 2025, Fabio's body was found at the bottom of a cove, below where his phone and belongings had been discovered. He had a senior role at Fujitsu, managing 300 people.
Inquest Findings
The inquest in Truro concluded that Fabio took his own life. Mr. Riley described Fabio as "a lovely person, so kind, and saw the best in everyone." He noted Fabio's pride in his family and his father's hard work. However, Fabio's family refused to accept his sexuality, with his father suggesting he pursue a relationship with a woman and making offensive comparisons to Hitler. His mother was ashamed to be seen with him. The emotional turmoil led to paranoia and delusions. Fabio left notes apologizing and expressing a desire to escape his dark place.
Family Statements
Fabio's sister Cristiana and ex-wife Antonella described him as "the most generous and thoughtful person." They noted his strong work ethic and love for cooking, wine, and gardening. However, in the months before his death, he became withdrawn and lost weight, isolating himself from hobbies and friends. The family acknowledged he was under considerable emotional strain.
Additional Pressures
The inquest also heard that Fabio worked at Fujitsu during the Post Office scandal, which may have added stress. A post-mortem report indicated multiple injuries consistent with a fall from height, with instantaneous death. Police found no suspicious circumstances, and a CID investigation concluded that his mental health deterioration and paranoid thoughts contributed to his decision.
Coroner's Conclusion
Senior coroner Andrew Cox recorded a suicide verdict, stating that Fabio likely ended his life shortly after his last phone call with Mr. Riley, with his phone and items found above where his body was located.
