Vinted Warns: Selling Knives or Fakes Could Get Account Banned

Vinted users have been warned that selling certain items could result in an immediate account ban. The popular second-hand clothing platform has clarified that it will not tolerate the sale of sharp knives or counterfeit goods.

Sharp Objects Banned

According to Vinted's updated catalogue rules, all sharp knives and bladed tools with a pointed tip are prohibited, regardless of size or intended use. This includes sharp outdoor tools, arts and crafts tools such as scissors, and collectable or antique knives.

A Vinted spokesperson said: "Restrictions on sharp knives and bladed items were already in place on Vinted to make sure our members feel safe using the platform. The update referenced on our website dates from last September and intended to make this policy extra clear and consistent across all of our markets."

Counterfeit Items Also Banned

In addition to sharp objects, counterfeit items such as fake designer handbags or belts are also subject to a ban. Other prohibited items include cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, and products containing fur, reptile skin, shell, or ivory.

Tax Implications for Sellers

Users should also be aware of the tax implications of selling on Vinted. Under current HMRC regulations, online platforms like Vinted are required to send data on users who make 30 or more sales per year, regardless of profit, and those whose gross sales exceed £1,700.

Lee Murphy, managing director of The Accountancy Partnership, explained: "HMRC uses data provided by the platform, whether this is Etsy, Vinted or even eBay, to match against each individual’s tax records." Sellers earning substantial amounts could risk fines if they fail to declare their income.
