Official crime statistics have ranked England's most dangerous towns and cities, revealing that the West Midlands is far less crime-ridden than many expect. Despite its reputation, only Birmingham made the national top 20, ranking 16th out of 276 areas.
Crime Rankings Overview
England's latest crime rankings show where residents are most likely to witness or be victims of offending. The national top 10 is dominated by northern England areas, with Nottingham as the only Midlands location in the top 10, placing seventh.
West Midlands Performance
Surprisingly, no Black Country area made the top 50 for England's most dangerous places. Sandwell ranked 54th, Wolverhampton 61st, and Walsall 69th. Coventry placed 75th and Solihull 104th. Dudley borough, with its more affluent areas, was further down at 123rd.
Outside Birmingham, crime is worse in the East Midlands, with Derby in 20th place and Leicester 38th.
National Context
Blackpool has overtaken Middlesbrough to become England's most dangerous place. Birmingham's large population partially explains its crime problems, along with factors like poverty and deprivation.
