Woman Slams Justice System for Silencing Survivors Over Trial Delay

A woman from the Midlands has condemned the justice system for 'silencing survivors' after the trial of her alleged abuser was adjourned due to health concerns. The 29-year-old, who reported being sexually abused between the ages of five and 15, expressed feelings of betrayal and frustration over the repeated delays.

Details of the Case

The woman contacted West Midlands Police in 2023 to report the abuse. Three other individuals also came forward, leading to 15 charges against the alleged abuser. Initially scheduled for 2027, the trial was moved to February this year due to the defendant's health. However, on the day of the trial, the woman was informed of a delay. Subsequent calls revealed further postponements until she was finally told the trial had been adjourned.

Reasons for Adjournment

The Crown Prosecution Service was prepared for the original date, but the defence raised concerns about the defendant's ability to participate due to health issues. The judge decided to adjourn to assess these issues, setting a new trial date for March 2028.

Impact on the Survivor

The woman described having a 'meltdown' upon hearing the news, stating, 'This is the lowest I have ever been. I feel betrayed.' She added, 'My voice has been stolen from me. All I want is a voice.' She criticized the system for delaying justice, saying, 'Waiting until 2028 is far from appropriate; we've already waited three years.'

She argued that the justice system is 'failing survivors of child sexual abuse' and 'silences survivors while the accused continues life as normal.' She noted that speaking publicly about the accused could jeopardize the case, leaving her feeling powerless.

Personal Toll

The ordeal has taken a severe toll on her health and relationships. She said, 'I've had loads of health issues, test after test, and all scans come back clear. The assumption is it's a physiological response to psychological stress. It's ruined my life.'
