Rotherham Street Carnival Returns for a Vibrant Free Celebration

The Roots: Rotherham Street Carnival is making a highly anticipated return to the town centre later this month, offering a free, family-friendly celebration for all ages. From 11am until 4:30pm on Saturday, March 28, the streets will burst into life with a colourful array of giant puppets, live music, and creative workshops, creating an unforgettable day of community spirit and entertainment.

Spectacular Parade and Giant Puppets Take Centre Stage

A major highlight of the carnival is the 'Spirit of the North' puppet, co-created by local community groups to honour Rotherham’s rich heritage. The spectacular carnival parade will commence at 3pm outside Rotherham Minster, led by the energetic Bollywood Brass Band. Thousands of residents are expected to join the procession, which will feature a joyful display of banners, music, and unique performances, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Councillor Marshall, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Green Spaces, expressed enthusiasm, noting that the event grows "bigger, better, and more bizarre" each year. Local creative talent is at the heart of the festival, ensuring it truly reflects the borough’s imagination and pride. Making a welcome return is 'Reign', a large-scale puppet crafted by local young people that debuted at last year's carnival, showcasing ongoing youth involvement.

Diverse Performances and Interactive Workshops

Visitors should also look out for 'Out of the Deep', a breathtaking outdoor performance featuring an incredible 13-foot-tall sea giant, adding a magical touch to the festivities. For those feeling creative, free costume-making workshops will be available at the Pavilion of the Hopeful Sun in All Saints Square, providing hands-on fun for families.

Throughout the day, young musicians from Rotherham Music will deliver surprise pop-up performances across the town centre, while the schedule is packed with drama and dance from local groups, including an outdoor puppet show titled 'Like a Tree'. Roaming street entertainers, such as parading pigeons and characters from the Enchanted Woodlands, will further enhance the lively ambiance.
