Rainham Swim Teacher Retires After 48 Years

Debbie Organ, a 66-year-old swimming teacher from Rainham, has retired after nearly 50 years of teaching thousands of local people to swim, spanning multiple generations in Havering.

Career Beginnings

Organ started in the leisure industry as a teenager in 1978 and became the first female lifeguard at Chafford Sports Complex. After qualifying as an instructor three years later, she managed swim schools and mentored other teachers for decades.

Family Passion for Swimming

Organ grew up competing alongside her siblings and briefly tried office work before returning to her true passion. She said: "I've always had an interest in swimming. My twin sisters and my brother all swam competitively too, so it was in the family."

She worked at Hornchurch and Harrow Lodge before returning to Rainham Leisure Centre when it opened. She commented: "I absolutely love teaching and I love the leisure industry. I love helping generations of swimmers, from parents right through to their children and grandchildren."

Importance of Swimming as a Life Skill

Organ emphasized swimming as an essential safety skill: "It's such an important life skill, I really believe everyone should learn. It's not just about being able to swim a length; it could save your life one day, or someone else's." She also noted its benefits for injured individuals as a low-impact activity.

Retirement Decision

Organ decided to retire when younger colleagues started calling her "nan." She joked: "When the staff started calling me 'nan', I knew it was time to leave." She plans to remain on hand for occasional cover.

Legacy and Successor

Her legacy continues with Jodie Denham, whom Organ personally mentored. Organ said: "Jodie's one of the swim teachers I encouraged to get into teaching, and I couldn't be proudest to be handing things over to her."

Tributes from Colleagues

Tony Phillips, general manager at Rainham Leisure Centre, said: "Debbie is one of a kind. I've known her for more than 30 years... She's like the mum of the sports centre. Over the years she's taught thousands of locals to swim... Not many people get to leave that kind of legacy behind."

Councillor Graham Day, cabinet member for adults and health at Havering Council, added: "Debbie’s remarkable 48-year career is a wonderful example of community service... On behalf of Havering Council, I thank Debbie for her outstanding contribution to our borough and wish her a long, happy and well-deserved retirement."
