St John Ambulance is launching a recruitment drive for new volunteers to help train local lifesavers and support communities across North Devon and Torridge. The charity is seeking people for a variety of roles, regardless of their background or previous experience.
Opportunities include community leaders, youth leaders, general volunteers, and first aiders who can assist at local events. The initiative comes as the Bideford unit marks a significant milestone: 100 years of serving the local community.
A Century of Service and Celebration
For the past century, the team has delivered emergency response support and vital first aid training to residents in the area. To celebrate the anniversary, young members recently completed a 100-mile walking and cycling challenge in Bideford.
Visitors to the milestone event also enjoyed live life-saving demonstrations and learned about the charity’s work. Organisers hope the historical celebration will inspire a new wave of local residents to sign up and contribute to the cause.
Volunteer Roles and How to Get Involved
George Stacey, community network leader, said: "One hundred years on, we're proud of our past, excited for our future, and committed to training the next generation of lifesavers. There's a place for anyone who wants to make a difference."
The roles are open to individuals from all walks of life, with training provided. Those interested in learning more about the positions and available training can email NorthDevonTorridgeCommunityNetwork@sja.org.uk.
Impact on the Community
The recruitment drive aims to strengthen community resilience by ensuring more people are equipped with life-saving skills. With the Bideford unit’s centenary serving as a backdrop, the charity is looking to build on its legacy and expand its reach across North Devon and Torridge.
By joining, volunteers will play a direct role in enhancing emergency preparedness and supporting local events, ensuring the community remains safe and well-trained for years to come.
