A stunning new piece of public art is set to be revealed in Cwmgors following eight months of secret collaboration among local residents. Artist Dani Lee, together with more than 50 community members, has created a large mosaic mural for the area. The official unveiling will take place on June 6, 2026, with former Cwmgors primary school pupil Gwynne Jones performing the ceremony.
Community Effort and Funding
Hwb y Gors Centre Manager Louise Griffiths expressed her excitement: “The mural depicts life in Cwmgors when the school first opened, filled with memories of the community as it was in 1912, lovingly crafted by our community in 2026. We extend a huge thank you to Dani Lee and all our talented muralists. We can’t wait for everyone to see their incredible work on public display. We are also very grateful to our funders: National Lottery Community Fund, NPT Heritage Fund, and Ashley Family Foundation for making this possible.”
Event Highlights
Visitors attending the unveiling can enjoy live music from Klezmer Klub and a mini exhibition exploring the local history behind the mosaic. Admission is completely free, and the local café will serve refreshments throughout the day.
Green-fingered residents can look forward to the return of the popular plant swap, running from 11:30am to 1:30pm for a small 50p donation. In celebration of The Great Big Green Week, the venue will host the first-ever Welsh Open Snail Racing Championships on the same day. Snail racing registration opens at midday, and participants can bring their own garden racer or hire a pedigree snail for 50p.
June 6 also marks World Green Roof Day, highlighting the three green roofs, solar panels, and eco-friendly heating system installed during the building's recent refurbishment.
Evening Celebration
To conclude the festivities, an evening of dance and music will take place in the main hall from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. This high-energy, alcohol-free event features a cacao ceremony and music from DJ Frosty. Tickets are available on the venue website for £25.
