10,000+ Expected for Birmingham Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan

More than 10,000 participants are anticipated for Birmingham and Sandwell's Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan this weekend. The Sikh festival, taking place on Sunday, April 26, will feature a grand procession from Handsworth to Sandwell, drawing thousands of attendees from all faiths.

Procession Details

The parade begins at 9:30am at Gurdwara Babe Ke in Hockley, traveling along Soho Road and concluding at 6pm in Smethwick. Organizers expect around 6,000 people to be walking the route at any given time. Rolling road closures will be implemented across both areas to ensure safety and smooth flow of the event.

Historical and Spiritual Significance

Birmingham's Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan has been celebrated for over 35 years. Nindi Singh from the Council of Sikh Gurdwaras Birmingham and Sandwell explained: "Nagar Kirtan marks the creation of the Khalsa Panth in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It is a time for reflection and renewal of loyalty to the Guru's teachings."

The event includes the Amrit Sanchar ceremony, a Sikh initiation ritual. Participants can enjoy Langar, a community kitchen offering vegetarian food, and Kirtan, spiritual hymns for humanity.

What to Expect

Attendees are warmly invited to join the celebrations. The Council has prepared a full guide to road closures and event details, along with a photo gallery from previous years to give newcomers a glimpse of the colorful procession.
