Councillor Jane Baston, Birmingham City Council's cabinet member for equalities, communities and social justice, has issued a statement marking South Asian Heritage Month, calling diversity one of the city's "greatest strengths." The month, running until July 31, encourages celebration, commemoration, and education on South Asian heritage in the UK and globally.
Unity in Diversity Theme
The theme for this year's South Asian Heritage Month is Unity in Diversity, aiming to celebrate the "extraordinary breadth and richness of South Asian communities in the UK and worldwide," according to the South Asian Heritage Trust. The trust notes that South Asia encompasses eight countries, hundreds of languages, multiple faiths, and shared histories. The theme invites exploration of what unites people across these differences, including shared values, intertwined histories, and a common commitment to community.
Councillor's Statement
Councillor Baston emphasized the significance of South Asian Heritage Month for Birmingham. "South Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the enormous contribution that South Asian communities have made, and continue to make, to Birmingham’s cultural, social and economic life," she said. She added, "Our city is one of the most diverse in the country, and that diversity is one of our greatest strengths. The stories, traditions, achievements and experiences of Birmingham’s South Asian communities form an important part of our shared history and identity."
Baston urged residents to participate in events across the city. "As we mark South Asian Heritage Month, we encourage residents to take part in events across the city, learn more about the rich heritage that shapes our communities, and celebrate the people whose contributions have helped make Birmingham the vibrant and welcoming city it is today," she concluded.
Demographics and Impact
According to BVSC, as of 2024, 31 per cent of Birmingham's population is classified as Asian or Asian British, reflecting deep-rooted South Asian heritage in many parts of the city. The South Asian Heritage Trust highlights that the month-long celebration focuses on shared histories and the strength that diversity brings, with events continuing until July 31.
