Birmingham's Chinese New Year 2026: A Vibrant Celebration of the Fire Horse
Tens of thousands of people came together in Birmingham to celebrate Chinese New Year 2026, marking the Year of the Fire Horse with a spectacular free family festival in Southside. The event, which lasted for most of the February half-term week, featured a packed programme of cultural performances and activities.
A Rich Array of Performances and Activities
Co-produced by the Birmingham Chinese Festival Committee and Birmingham Hippodrome, the celebration included lion and dragon processions, K-pop dance, traditional Chinese dance, drummers, and choirs. Audiences had the opportunity to meet Pom Pom, a ten-foot panda, before welcoming the new year with a breathtaking firework finale.
Additionally, original work from six artists was showcased in Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio as part of the New Earth Theatre Makers Academy Plus Showcase, adding a creative dimension to the festivities.
Community and Support
Matt Evans, Head of Festivals & Sites at Birmingham Hippodrome, expressed his privilege in co-producing the event, noting the incredible sight of families filling Southside to welcome the Year of the Fire Horse. Crowds packed the streets as the city united in celebration.
The celebrations were supported by the W Wing Yip & Brothers Foundation, along with donations, partnerships, or in-kind support from Rainbow Casino, Chung Ying, The Southside Building, and Birmingham City Council.
This vibrant festival not only highlighted Birmingham's multicultural spirit but also set a high standard for future celebrations, offering a glimpse of what to expect in 2027.
