West Midlands Metro passengers will no longer be able to buy a ticket on board any tram from 13 September, as new Revenue Officers begin checking tickets and enforcing Penalty Fare notices. The move is designed to reduce fare evasion and bring the network in line with other UK public transport operators.
New Revenue Officers and ticket checks from September 13
From that date, travellers must purchase a ticket before starting their journey, either at ticket machines at every tram stop, via the MyMetro app, or by using a Swift travel card topped up with the journey amount. Season tickets also remain valid.
Revenue Officers will use handheld technology to carry out regular ticket, pass and mobile payment checks. The checks will take place on trams and on platforms, ensuring that everyone who travels has paid the correct fare.
£100 Penalty Fare and modernised ticketing
Passengers found travelling without a valid ticket or pass, who had the chance to buy one, may be issued a Penalty Fare Notice of £100. This applies to customers on a tram or on the platform immediately after getting off. The charge aligns West Midlands Metro with national transport standards and supports efforts to reduce deliberate fare evasion, according to operators Midlands Metro Limited.
Operators said: "As our network grows, we want buying a ticket to feel the same wherever you travel. Buy Before You Board brings us in line with other transport operators, gives you more ways to pay, and keeps things fair for everyone travelling with us."
They added: "This is part of a wider programme to modernise ticketing across our network, and supports the new £100 Penalty Fare, bringing Metro in line with other UK public transport networks. Buy Before You Board ensures everyone pays their fare thus contributing fairly, speeds up boarding and improves the overall customer experience."
How to buy tickets in advance
Tickets can be purchased in advance using ticket machines at every tram stop, the MyMetro app, or a Swift travel card topped up before travel. The change affects all trams on the West Midlands Metro network, which serves Birmingham and surrounding areas.
The enforcement begins on 13 September, with Revenue Officers conducting regular checks to ensure compliance. Passengers who fail to buy a ticket before boarding risk the £100 Penalty Fare, which brings the network in line with other UK public transport systems.
