Birmingham's closest Blue Flag beach is Borth in Ceredigion, just 118 miles from the city according to Google Maps. This sandy beach offers three miles of gently shelving golden sand and shallow waters, perfect for families.
Why Borth Beach Is a Great Choice
Borth is the longest sandy beach in Ceredigion, set on an estuary with views towards the 'dreamy' Aberdyfi and Cadair Idris mountain. While Trecco Bay and Rest Bay in Porthcawl are closer in journey time (around two and a half hours), they are 141 miles away, making Borth 23 miles closer.
The beach has a Blue Flag award for 2026, meaning it meets high water quality standards and has good safety and facilities. An RNLI Lifeguard service operates from 10am to 6pm from June to September.
Things to Do at Borth
For children who love sand dunes, the northern end leads to Ynyslas National Nature Reserve. Cars are allowed on the firm sand at the top of the beach, and many people sit in their cars with coffee to enjoy the views. At high tide, only pebbles and shingles are visible.
Walking routes take you into the Cambrian Mountains, where you can visit the Red Kite Feeding Centre and Devil's Bridge, or along the Ceredigion Coast Path. Look out for ospreys. There is a cafe nearby, plus pubs, restaurants, and shops in the small town, part of the Dyfi Biosphere, the only UNESCO Biosphere reserve in Wales.
Borth is also known for its ancient submerged petrified forest, which reveals birch, willow, pine, and oak stumps at certain times of the year. Legend says this is a 'hidden kingdom' lost at sea when the guardian of sea defences forgot to close the gates.
Dog Restrictions and Accommodation
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from May to the end of September. For overnight stays, consider The Coup, a semi-detached seafront property with direct beach access, or Beechwood Lodge, a two-bedroom lodge in a holiday park with enclosed decking.
How to Get to Borth from Birmingham
The 118-mile trip by car via the A458 takes around two hours and 45 minutes, traffic permitting. The postcode for satnav is SY24 5LJ. Alternatively, a direct train from Birmingham New Street to Borth takes two hours and 40 minutes, and the station is less than a mile from the beach.
