Birmingham Food and Drink Round-Up: 13 Closures, 6 New Sushi Joints, and More
Brum Food News: 13 Closures, 6 New Sushi Spots, Pub Awards

Birmingham's food and drink scene is experiencing a paradoxical moment: while around 13 major closures have hit the city this year, at least six new sushi joints have opened or been announced. The latest sushi arrival is Solihull favourite KIBOU, which confirmed plans to transform the former Riva Blu site on Temple Row. The closure of Riva Blu surprised many, as it shut abruptly without prior notice.

Closures and Emotional Goodbyes

Among the notable closures, Caneat in Stirchley has announced it will shut its doors. The venue was praised for its secret garden, surprise specials, and family-friendly atmosphere. It was on many 'places to try' lists for 2026, but its removal came just a week after Simpsons was also scratched from those lists. The Marco Pierre White Steakhouse at The Cube has also closed alongside the hotel, sparking rumours about who might take over the space.

New Openings and Expensive Treats

The sushi boom includes KIBOU and five other new venues. Meanwhile, a Snowflake Gelato stall in the Bullring is selling ice lollies for £7.80, which the writer found too pricey. A Costa Coffee outlet in the Bullring has been boarded over for a refresh, according to the shopping centre, with no plans for the brand to leave. A new Vyve Cafe kiosk offering matcha and flavoured teas will open elsewhere in the centre.

Pub Awards and World Cup Viewing

Two Birmingham pubs have been recognised: one is the only Midlands boozer shortlisted in the sports category of the Great British Pub Awards, and another won Traditional Pub of the Year at the Midlands Food, Drink and Hospitality Awards. Both are recommended for watching the World Cup.
